Understanding Volume.
Volume Basics. Volume is the amount of
space your shipment takes up.
Gross Volume. A partial shipment's volume
is based on gross volume, which are the outside measurements
of a crate or pallet. For example, if a pallet of
boxes is 40" wide, 48" long and 84" tall, then
the gross volume is 93.3 cubic feet.
Determining the Volume. Once you know exactly
what you are taking, determining your volume can be done in
the three ways listed below:
- Aliyah
Lift Calculator : This is a spreadsheet filled with
commonly-sized household items. Simply enter the quantity
of each item that you are taking and the total volume changes
accordingly. Please request yours by email or by phone.
- Phone
Survey
: This non-invasive survey is easy and quick to complete.
Make a list of all the items you want to take
and we can review it over the phone with you to determine
your volume.
- In-House
Survey : Our agent will come to your home and do
a walk-thru, making a list of all the items you designated
to be in your shipment.
It
is important to know that any of the three surveys is subject
to a discrepancy of 10% - 20%. For example, the
survey may indicate that the volume is 400 cubic feet; but in
reality, the volume could be as low as 320 cubic feet and as
high as 480 cubic feet.
Furniture Sizes and Box Sizes. To
help you further understand volume, here are a few commonly-sized
household items and box sizes and their functions.
- Book
Box : 12" x 12" x 18" : 1.5 cubic
feet : Great for packing books
- Large
Box : 18" x 18" x 24" : 4.5 cubic

linens or clothes
- Wardrobe

best
- 3
Couch Couch : 80 cubic feet (approximately)

Lift
Vans and Shipping Crates. Lift Vans (see
photo) are popular shipping and storage crates, and since they
are an industry standard item, the cost is relatively low compared
to custom crating. Lift Vans are approximately 4'
x 7' x 7' and have 200 cubic feet gross volume.
A Sample 20' Container.
When shipping a container, the cost of shipping is not
based on volume, but rather for the whole container, regardless
of how much space you use. Weight is not a factor
when shipping a container with household goods.

it takes to fill up a 20' Container. Our sample is based on
